Abai Jungle Lodge is located on the banks of the Kinabatangan River is only accessible by a one hour boat journey from Sandakan and a similar time from Sukau, a larger village further up the river. It provides a fantastic base for spotting the wealth of wildlife that can be found in the area in a short space of time.
Accommodation at Abai Jungle Lodge is in simple but clean and comfortable stilted chalets. There are 24 stilted wooden chalets which are divided in to small blocks of two or three, connected by scenic walkways and are within an easy walk to the cosy communal areas. They're each simply furnished with a double bed, twin beds or triple beds, as well as a desk, ceiling fan, netted windows and a private bathroom with a hot shower that uses recycled water. The biodegradable shower gel and toilet paper are provided to reduce the lodge’s environmental impact. Air conditioning has been installed in a very limited number of guestrooms. Each chalet shares a large veranda which looks out on to the river.
As Abai Jungle Lodge is located away from the main Sukau area, you’ll enjoy the natural environment without sharing it with crowds of other boats. You will spend your days going out on boat trips to cruise along the river, spotting wildlife such as exotic birds, the long-nosed proboscis monkey and perhaps an orangutan or two. There is a small bar and simple restaurant serving delicious local food. The food is sourced locally, with the freshwater ingredients bought directly from the surrounding tribes, who are likely to have caught it that very same day.
