Built in 19th century as a fortress and once the residence of the Penlop of Paro, Gangtey Palace Hotel was converted to a hotel in 1995 by a relative of Bhutanese Royal family. This traditional Bhutanese hotel is voted as one of the most charming hotels in Paro Bhutan, with its prime location, overlooking the Paro Dzong and Rinpung Dzong, an advantage few Bhutan resorts and hotels in Bhutan can compete.
Gangtey Palace Hotel is an interesting heritage hotel with beautiful authentic Bhutanese decoration. It is located at a vantage point overlooking the Paro valley and Rinpung Dzong, Gangtey Palace offers a unique place to stay and relax in an intimacy of a family home. Not all Bhutan resorts and hotels in Bhutan has the settings like this hotel.
Gangtey Palace Hotel has 19 rooms in total which vary in size. Hot stone baths can be arranged, this is a great way to relax after a day sightseeing and trekking in the Paro valley. Facilities are fairly simple and basic but it certainly has charm and a relaxed and friendly ambience. Some of the rooms are up some rather steep and narrow staircases which are not ideal for those with knee problems or limited mobility.
