Bhutan Holidays

Draped along the mighty Himalaya lies tiny Bhutan, one of the last true unspoilt countries on earth. It is a Himalayan Kingdom packed with stunning natural beauty, from lush-green rice paddies running alongside fast-flowing glacial rivers, to endless forested-mountains and the snow-capped peaks beyond. Now Bhutan is opening its gorgeous vistas, peaceful farms and unique traditions to a few lucky visitors.

On a journey to Bhutan, you can experience every facet of this incredible country. Travel to Thimphu, Bhutan’s temple-dotted capital, meeting monks in impressive monasteries. Continue to Paro, then climb the twisting steps of the legendary Tiger's Nest Monastery, impossibly perched 3,000 feet above the valley floor. And, you’ll find the Bhutanese people welcoming in showing you their deeply Buddhist and traditional way of life, where Gross National Happiness is more important than gross domestic product.

Our Expert Guides to Travelling in Bhutan

The snowy Himalayas form a stunning backdrop to the kingdom known as Land of the Thunder Dragon. Bhutan is a place where the majesty of the landscape seems to bring local legends vividly to life - none more so than the enduring mystery of the yeti. This enigmatic country remains largely unexplored and has a strong emphasis on low-impact tourism, meaning that it has maintained its charming cultures and traditions. On a Bhutan vacation, friendly locals will add to the charm of exploring historic cities, and discovering mysterious monasteries clinging to the side of misty cliffs. You will also no doubt come across one of its many colourful festivals or ‘tsechus’, which often involve masked dancing, bright costumes and folk songs. Our travel guides allow you to gain an insight into the unique customs that make this country such a special place.
Bhutan is a land shrouded in mystery, with soaring mountain peaks, picturesque valleys and delightful people. The nation has long resisted outside influence, including television until recent times.

Ideas for Experiencing Bhutan

The last of the Himalayan kingdoms, there’s nowhere on earth quite like Bhutan. Though this remote Himalayan kingdom is no stranger to visitors, much of it is yet to be explored and there are many things to see and do. Climb to the cliff-perched Taktsang Lhakhang (Tiger's Nest Monastery) 900 hundred metres above the Paro Valley, Bhutan’s Machu Picchu or visit the Phobjika Valley in winter to see the rare black-necked cranes that migrate from Tibet. Make time to explore the country’s dzongs, or fortresses, such as those in Punakha, Haa, Trashigang and Trongsa, and trek through the pastures of the Bumthang Valleys, staying in farmhouse homestays. The more time you spend in Bhutan, the more you realize that much like its beautiful prayer flags, Bhutan has a wealth of colourful stories to tell at every bend.
Hot Air Balloon in Bhutan

Hot-air balloon in Phobjikha Valley, Bhutan is a new way to experience the exotic kingdom - so called Kingdom of Thunder Dragon. The Balloon ride is perfect to combine with one of the luxury Bhutan tours in which you can relax at a high-end lodge in Gangtey.

10 Reasons Why You Should Visit Bhutan

In January, I set my foot on one of my top bucket list items: visiting the happiest country on earth, the remote Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan.
