Visit bolaven plateau

Spreading across parts of all four southern provinces, the fertile Bolaven Plateau (known in Lao as Phu Phieng Bolaven) is characterized by high-grade coffee and tea plantations, cool climate and dramatic waterfalls surrounded by lush vegetation. Various ethnic groups inhabit the area. Historically, the Laven dominated the region, but nowadays other ethnic groups such as the Alak, Katu, Ta-oy and Suay also reside in the area.

The Bolaven Plateau is within easy reach of Si Phan Don (4000 Islands), Champasak and Pakse, just an hour or so by car, and along with the coffee & tea plantations, the region's highlights include the impressive heights of the Tad Fane waterfall and the very relaxed atmosphere of Tad Lo waterfall. Here, jungle treks are available for the more adventurous.

An expanse of highland formed from an ancient volcano, the Bolaven Plateau is one of southern Laos’ most attractive destinations.

Best Time to Visit Bolaven Plateau

Best time to visit Bolaven Plateau is definitely during the high season, which is from November until February when the temperatures are high 20s, but much more comfortable and the surroundings are really lush.

The rainy season in Laos may not be the best time for travelling to Bolaven Plateau, as the weather gets rather cool and not all destinations are accessible due to ruined and flooded roads. However, one thing that certainly gets better with the rain is the beauty and the power of waterfalls. In southern Laos, Bolaven Plateau is famous among trekkers. It has gorgeous vistas, ethnic villages, coffee and tea plantations, and two spectacular waterfalls - Tad Fane and Taat Fang, also known as Dong Hua Sao. Trekking in the rainforests can be somewhat challenging, but very rewarding with magnificent vistas and untouched nature.
