Visit can tho

Situated on the banks of the Hau River, Can Tho is a bustling town on the banks of the Mekong Delta, where over 50 percent of the country's rice is produced. As the political, economic, cultural and transportation centre of the Mekong Delta, it’s a buzzing town with a lively waterfront lined with sculpted gardens, an appealing blend of narrow backstreets and wide boulevards, and perhaps the greatest concentration of foreigners in the delta. As the old saying about Can Tho City goes: white rice, clear waters, all who come wish never to leave. Locals are laid back and straightforward, with the fervor of life mainly revolving around the Ninh Kieu pier, a great place to stroll around at night. Can Tho has a sizable Khmer community, because of its location in the delta, and thus many Khmer temples are an integrated part of Can Tho’s best attractions. It is also the perfect base for nearby floating markets, the major draw for tourists who come here to boat along the many canals and rivers leading out of town.

Cai-Rang-Floating-market

Cai Rang Floating Market

Touring a floating market in the Mekong Delta is a box that none of travellers to Vietnam want to miss checking, and none are bigger or more popular than Can Tho’s Cai Rang wholesale floating market. It’s a six kilometre journey or around a 30-minute boat ride from Can Tho to arrive to the wondrous scene, in the direction of Soc Trang. The market starts around 05:00 and runs until midday while best around 6am to 7am, therefore it's well worth getting here early to beat the boatloads of tourists and the heat as well as to make the most of your boat trip.

Munirangsyaram Pagoda

Dating back to the mid-1940s, the Munirangsyaram Pagoda is a little gem in the centre of the city and was built for the local Khmer community. The fantastic ornamentation is typical of Khmer Theravada Buddhist pagodas, with none of the multiple Bodhisattvas and Taoist spirits common in Vietnamese Mahayana styled pagodas.

Bang Lang Stork Garden

Traveling to Can Tho, tourists should not miss Bang Lang stork garden with more than 150.000 storks flying in the afternoons. Located some 50km northwest of Can Tho, this is of great potential for ecotourism with astonishing views of thousands of resident storks and snowy egrets. There is a tall viewing platform to see the birds filling the branches; the best times to view this incredible sight are around dawn and dusk. There is also a bridge located about 2 km from the main road to the garden. Two sides of road are depicted with two lush green bamboo trees which bring a sense of rustic and serene atmosphere here.

Binh Thuy Ancient House

Binh Thuy ancient house in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho is an ideal place to explore the region’s history. Located about five kilometres from Can Tho downtown, the house is filled with features that represent rural areas in the Mekong Delta region during the 20th century. “Binh Thuy” means “peaceful waters” in Vietnamese, so named after a local canal where a provincial chief sought refuge in a big storm. With front and back gardens, the five-room house offers a comfortable environment full of fresh air and brilliant sunshine. Today, the home is an outstanding example of Western and Oriental architectural elements.

Best Time to Visit Can Tho

The best time to visit Can Tho is between October and March when the water levels are high enough for boat markets, sailing trips and to watch the busiest river life. January to March overall offers the best weather throughout Vietnam, although prices can rise dramatically around Tet time, when shops and restaurants also tend to close for a few days. For good-value hotels, try visiting in late September when the monsoon rains have left lush foliage and the harvest will be in full swing.
