Visit kep

Once the site of a series of major battles between the French colonial forces and a Chinese army, modern-day Kep is a sleepy seaside town renowned for its seafood and those spooky remains of that decadent past. Founded as a seaside retreat for the French elite in 1908 and a favoured haunt of Cambodian high-rollers during the 1960s, most notably King Sihanouk, whose former crumbling villa still stands in the area; Kep (also spelled Kaeb) located 25km from Kampot, is drawing tourists back with seafood, sunsets and hikes in butterfly-filled Kep National Park.

Kep's quaint streets and close proximity to the pristine beaches and waters of the Gulf of Thailand also offer a markedly different experience than elsewhere in the country. Though now eclipsed by Sihanoukville, it is making a spirited comeback as a day-trip destination from Phnom Penh. Its impressive range of boutique hotels squarely targets a more cultured beach crowd than the party-happy guesthouses of Sihanoukville and the islands.

Kep was Cambodia's top seaside destination until eclipsed in the 1960s by Sihanoukville.
