It is the capital of Kangwon Province with long history, situated at the middle part of coastline of the East Sea of Korea. It is named after the shape of the mountains rising up like a folding screen. Some highlights of the city include: Kaeson Revolutionary Museum, Wonsan Railway Station, Wonsan square.
Founded in 1948 Wonsan Agricultural University was the first agricultural university in the country and possesses faculties in farming, agricultural biology, animal husbandry, fruit farming, veterinary and other related areas. It has its own miniature practice farm and greenhouses. The university building features an unusual for Korea type of architecture - this building used to be a German church built by German settlers early in 20th century.
Songdowon International Children's Union Camp
Songdowon International Children’s Camp is a comprehensive after-school educational base for local and foreign schoolchildren. It is situated in Songdowon, Wonsan city, Kangwon Province. As the biggest camp in DPRK, Songdowon International Children’s Camp covers an area of 340,000㎡ with a total floor space of 58,000㎡.
The Camp has many facilities need for camping including Kim Jong Il patriotism education room, International Friendship Schoolchildren’s House, outdoor gymnasium, indoor swimming pool, outdoor wading pool, archery field, aquarium, aviary and animal stuffed specimen exhibition house.
It has two camping; summer camping from April to the middle of October and winter camping from January to end of March. Here are Statues of President Kim Il Sung and leader Kim Jong Il. International Friendship Schoolchildren’s House is a 2-storeyed building.
Masikryong Ski Resort
There are 10 ski slopes stretching as if a roll of silk hanging from the sky in Masikryong Ski Resort, the ski resort is a comprehensive winter sports centre for skiing, skating and sleighing. Masikryong is a pass between Bubang ri Munchon city and Jikdong ri Bopdong county in Kangwon province. The pass with the ski resort is about 1,360m. It was named “Masikryong” from the meaning that even horse was so hard that it had a rest to go over the ridge. For a while, it was called “Masuryong” as the horse went over the ridge drinking water several times. The total area of ski resort is about 1,400 hectares.
The 10 ski slopes for expert are designed with an average length of 1,700 m and varying width 40 to 120 m including the slope which starts from the summit of Taehwa peak 1,360m high above sea level and runs down 5,000 m, the slopes for beginners and intermediate slopes, snow playground for children and a skating ground. The longest slope is 5091 m long.
The famous Ullim Waterfall in Chonnae County, Kangwon Province of Korea is one of the famous waterfalls in Korea. The fall is originated from ranges of Masik Pass, with 20 to 25 cubic meters of water volume per second the 75m cataract pours down. The fall hits a rock in the halfway and divides into twin falls at the height of 45 meters, making thunderous sound echo as far as four kilometers around. That is why the waterfall is called "Ullim" or "echo" in Korean.
At the bottom of the falls, there is a pond, 1.5 meters deep and 30 meters in radius, inhabited with minnow, rainbow trout and other species of fishes.
Chonsam Cooperative Farm
Situated on the outskirts of Wonsan, the Chonsam Cooperative Farm is one of the few places where foreign visitors are allowed to observe a working farm. Chonsam means "an area of three villages where springs well out". The farm is specialising in cultivating rice, maize and vegetables. Persimmon is the speialty of the farm - you will hear the great story about Kim Il Song who visited this farm and spotted how many persimmons were hanging at a tree. In the farm there is a kindergarten which tourist usually visit to enjoy children's performance. You also can visit a farmer's house to chat with the family and see how people live in the village.
Sijung Lake & Sijung Beach
Sijung Lake is one of the lagoons situated in Thongchon County. The lake and the sea are bisected by a motorway. There is famous medical treatment centre offering a bathing resort, a marina, angling site, mud treatment. Its mud is widely used in Korea.
Meanwhile, Sijung Beach is just one of a number of tranquil beaches in North Korea. It was once a famous holiday retreat area during the Ri dynasty. Members of the royal family came to this lake district to relax. Sijung beach is half way between Wonsan and Kumgan Mt., it is 1.5h drive from Wonsan. You can swim if weather permits.
