Begin this Great Wall Hiking Tour with a pickup (8 AM) from the hotel in Beijing, then drive directly to the Xizhazi village (2.5 hours). Climb up a path for about 1 hour to reach Jiankou where you begin the hike on the wall today.
From Jiankou, we will walk eastwards to Mutianyu, a section of the wall that has been largely restored. The duration of the day will be spent (with a guide) along the wall, with an overnight at a nearby local village homestay. Today’s hike will cover an area of around 10 km, split between a 5-6 hour hike. Mutianyu offers some breathtaking views of the valley and wall below. As few visitors get as far as this section, there won’t be too many crowds to battle.
During the trek, you will be guided by an expert guide who will give you all information like history, events, defense specifics and tactics implied in the wall system. After hiking to Mutianyu, you can hike down to the parking lot. Drive to the homestay in Mutianyu.
OPTIONAL: Those who do not want to hike down can take a cable car, or take a toboggan ride (summer available only) down to meet your driver.
Overnight in Mutianyu.
In the morning, you will be transferred to the east gate of Jinshanling, to start the 5-km hike towards Simatai West. This section offers arguably the finest hiking anywhere on the Great Wall. It is extremely photogenic, with over 15 watchtowers, and steep gradients that give constantly changing perspectives with their wide, open views. There is fascinating variety in the watch-towers here, and the wall overall is wild, ruined, original, while also restored and elegant.
Down the wall and transfer to local restaurant for a unique hotpot lunch. A dish originally from Sichuan Province, this will be a good opportunity to flex chopstick skills, while choosing different ingredients.
After the Great Wall Hiking Tour, transport will be provided back to Beijing. End the tour.
