Cycling Distance: 12kms / Difficulty: Very Easy

Upon arrival in the charming old town of KUCHING, you will be welcomed by your guide and transferred to the hotel for check in.

In the afternoon, meet your cycling guide for a briefing on the adventure to cycle the Headhunters Heartland. Then start our journey to visit colonial buildings in Kuching town. Ride through the Main Bazaar of the picturesque old town, and stop at the Square Tower which is located at the edge of the Waterfront.

After that, cycle along the south bank of Sarawak River and cross the river on a traditional “sampan” to visit Fort Margherita. This fort was constructed in 1879 by Charles Brooke to guard Kuching’s river approaches from pirate. Named after Charles Brooke’s wife, Ranee Margaret, it is an unmistakable landmark along Sarawak River. We also visit the Brooke Gallery which tells the story of one of the most remarkable kingdoms in Borneo’s history: Sarawak and its “White Rajahs”. Enjoy a romantic dinner at sunset on the banks of the Sarawak River.

Today, continue the journey to explore the depths of Borneo island. Embark on a 2-hour drive to Serian Wet Market located 70 km far from Kuching. Here, you will find every kind of fruit in Borneo. Then head on another 2-hour drive (82 km) to Lachau, a small quaint and favourite Iban trading centre. On arrival, have lunch in a local restaurant.

After lunch, we take a 2.5-hour traditional long boat ride to a remote longhouse of the Iban villages of BANTING. The local use the fertile lowlands for paddy farming. Banting has rocky hill by the river which is the primitive fort, preventing villagers from the outside invaders. When the early Christian missionaries came to Banting in 19th century, they recognised the importance of the site and built the St. Paul’s Church in 1859. Climb the hill to inspect the church, ask someone to explain the mysterious rock formations near the river, see people produce artistic handicrafts like mat-making and weaving, or wander off to the rice fields and vegetable gardens.

NOTE: Swimming in the river is NOT permitted because of crocodiles.

Start the today's journey with a 1.5 hour boat transfer to a tiding outpost of Lingga. Have breakfast in a local restaurant and begin the 3.5-hour cycling adventure up the majestic Batang Lupar River. A long the way, we ride through traditional longhouse villages, farms and paddy fields. During this easy ride along the banks of the great river, you can see the natural phenomenon of tidal bore roar pass if we are lucky.

Pedal into the capital of the Batang Lupar, SRI AMAN (formerly known as Simanggang) in time for lunch. Visit Fort Alice (1864) and learn about its historical role during the colonial era. Like all forts, Alice served for defense and security, as administrative headquarters, and as a prison.

Have dinner and free at leisure at your hotel.

After breakfast, a short boat transfer will take you cross the river to the start point of the 4-hour cycling journey today. Padel overland to the next township of Betong, located on the banks of Layar River. After a good stint of pedaling, take a well- deserved stop at a good coffee shop followed by lunch in BETONG!

After lunch, leave the bikes and get on a van to visit Fort Lily, built to fortify this ‘outstation’. Lily has seen considerable action in the turbulent times when Iban chief Rentap challenged the Rajah; some of the cannon used in the skirmishes are preserved in the Betong District Office.

Your journey continues by van along winding road dotted with small scale pepper farms, rice fields and rubber plantations to reach the rustic old town of DEBAK. Reach an authentic century-old longhouse and join the host for a tour of his farm enroute to a waterfall. Old or new, longhouse hospitality is from the heart, but the facilities tend to be fairly simple. Enjoy the best hospitality from the locals’ and be prepared to eat seated on the floor, and sleep on a mattress under a mosquito net.

After breakfast at the longhouse, bid farewell to local people, then embark on a 1-hour drive on van to Batang Ai Junction. From here, cycle away from the trunk road, southwards, towards the Kalimantan border. Numerous longhouses along the trail makes the point: this is the Iban heartland. Afterwards, we make a detour up the Lemanak River where the terrain gets hilly.

Pedal and pedal until you can literally go no further, and you’ll reach a man-made lake snuggled among the hills in BATANG AI. This lake supplies hydro-electricity to most of Kuching and West Sarawak. Board a boat hen cross the hydro lake to the Batang Ai Resort. Spend a leisurely afternoon and evening, recovering from the rigours of the trail.

After breakfast, depart Batang Ai early in the morning by a 30-minute boat and make a 30-minute transfer to a small-town called Lubok Antu. From here, start today’s 30km cycling trail on a country lane to a town called ENGKILILI. The terrain is slightly hilly with mountain and forest views along the way. The trail is part gravel and part tarmac.

After lunch taken at Engkillili, pack up the bikes and head back to KUCHING for early evening arrival. Check into the hotel and freshen up for a final dinner together at the Topspot Food Center in Kuching. It’s where all the good food of Sarawak comes together. The waiters don’t carry white serviettes over their left arm and the ambiance leaves something to be desired, but the food is, seriously, something to write home about!
