This day, visit some important monasteries in the area. Start with a visit to Shey Gompa
, located some 15 kms from Leh. The monastery was built first in 1655 by the king of Ladakh, Deldan Namgyal, also known as Lhachen Palgyigon. It used to be the summer palace of the kings of Ladakh. Then head out to visit the 12m Shakyamuni Buddha statue inside the nearby Dresthang Gompa.
Our next site is Thiksey Gompa
which is considered to be one of the most beautiful monasteries in Ladakh. Afterwards, head south to Hemis Monastery
, located about 45 kms south of Leh. This monastery belongs to the Drukpa order and was founded in the early 17th century. It is one of the most famous and largest monasteries in Ladakh. After that, return to Leh.
